The eye-catching scheme was designed to respond to the local surroundings as well as cater for modern living. From the buff riven concrete slabs to the turfed rear gardens, the development feels modern yet at ease in its traditional rural environment.

The choice of bricks - Ibstock’s Surrey County Red with projecting Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth - were integral to creating the desired aesthetic. The red bricks, which are perforated and wire-cut with a light texture, reflect the village location. Meanwhile, the contrasting Staffs Slate Blues provide visual interest and create a more urban and contemporary aesthetic.

Judges Comment:
“A very neatly designed building that serves to enhance its older (and varied) neighbours and in what is a wide street of mixed styles. It is cleverly planned internally and externally.”

Due to the sensitive location and massing requirements, the project uses brick in innovative ways. While textured red brick, enhanced by red mortar raked joints, is used to ground the building to the site – with a glazed burgundy brick framing the entrance door to signal arrival. The the white glazed brick above, which clads the upper portion of the building, allows the massing to disappear into the sky, visually reducing its presence, with a dynamic quality changing with the weather.

“The submission from Lyons & Annoot was exemplary. It covered the whole range of management concerns in detail and presented a business that took exceptional care of its staff and was rewarded with loyalty and performance.”

Lyons & Annoot are one of the longest established and continuosly trading masonry contractors. Operating since 1972 as a partnership and 1986 as a limited company- 50 years in Construction. Winning its first Brick Award in 1992. The firm's longevity speaks volumes, The business has maintained its principles during this time of building in partnership and to the highest standards, and offering as much of its services as possible in-house by our long established team.

Judges Comment:
“A delightful and unexpected take on Philip Webb's Red House of 1860 that abounds with fun and unexpected details. Wherever you turn you are met with a joyful and unique view but the house is also immensely practical and robustly detailed.”

This characterful facade is reinforced through the use of Ibstock’s Laybrook Imperial Red. These thrown stocks have a handcrafted quality that soften the rigid order of elevations. Each brick is meticulously laid in different bonds with corbel details, round header surrounds, arches and angled specials. The brickwork pattern is not just decorative, but innovatively denotes the plan arrangement within – where stretcher bond panels express the functional spaces behind including bathrooms and utility spaces; whilst soldier bond is used to express curved bays and conceal movement joints.

The awards are the highlight of the brick industry calendar and see a huge range of projects entered across a range of categories, covering developments of all sizes in both the UK and internationally. This year projects featuring Ibstock bricks emerged as the winner in five categories, including: Individual Housing Development, Housebuilder, Education, Urban Regeneration, and Special Brickwork Contractor. Additionally, Ibstock bricks were used in a project receiving a commendation in the Public category, Springfield Hospital. The diversity of the category wins demonstrate the breadth of Ibstock’s product range and the variety of industry sectors and project types in which they are used, reinforcing its guiding purpose to build a better world by being at the heart of building.
