Ibstock’s position as a leading supplier to UK housebuilders was further reinforced after securing wins across two separate housebuilding categories at the Brick Development Association (BDA) Brick Awards 2025.
Held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on November 5, the annual event celebrates the best of the brick industry, recognising the outstanding achievements of architects, brickwork contractors, developers, clients and, of course, brick manufacturers.
Daniel Bourne of Ibstock, commented: “We are delighted that our bricks played a standout role in two award-winning Crest Nicholson developments in the ‘Housebuilder’ category - the eye-catching Waterfront scheme at Gloucester Quays; and Brooklands Park in Bristol, an impressive collection of apartments and homes.
“Within the ‘Large Housing Development’ class (101+ units), Bulrush Court designed by Pitman Tozer Architects was a winner utilising Old English Grey and Commercial Red bricks from Ibstock’s Birtley factory”
“I would also like to congratulate the Ketley Brick Company on their win in the Craftsmanship category for the use of their Staffordshire Blue brick on the Silvertown Tunnel project in London.”
The Waterfront, Gloucester Quays
The £80 million residential development at Monks Meadow delivers 362 one and two-bedroom apartments across three and four-storey blocks, alongside 49 two and three-storey townhouses.
Occupying a prime waterside location on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, the scheme was designed by Holder Mathias architects. Ibstock bricks specified for the project - Arden Weathered Red, Leicester Weathered Red and Priory Weathered Red - were used to striking effect.
Bourne added: “The wonderful views over the water make this an exceptionally desirable place to live. We are proud to have contributed to a scheme so thoughtfully designed by Holder Mathias and expertly delivered by Crest Nicholson. The varied hues of the chosen Ibstock bricks bring depth and contrast, enhancing the development’s overall visual impact.
“This was a challenging project, built on a brownfield site running alongside Monk Meadow Dock and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, but the finished result speaks for itself.”
Brooklands Park, Bristol
Located in Stoke Gifford, Brooklands Park features a collection of one and two bedroom apartments and 3 and 4-bedroom energy-efficient homes, each designed for modern living with high-quality finishes and smart features. Select plots also include solar panels and EV charging points.
Bourne added: “We were naturally delighted that Jennings Design architects specified several of our popular brick types - Multi Cream, Leicester Weathered Red, Bridgewater Weathered Red, Bristol Brown and Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth. Their creative use has helped form an attractive, cohesive development while still allowing for distinctive architectural character.
Bulrush Court, London
This development by The Guinness Partnership comprises 144 affordable homes in a mid rise mansion block in the Lower Lea Valley as part of a wider regeneration in East London. The properties are a mix of one, two and three bed apartments.
Bourne comments: “This is a stylish and well thought out scheme and Ibstock’s Birtley Old English Grey and Commercial Red bricks play an important part in creating the identity of this imposing apartment block development.”
The building is arranged around a communal landscaped courtyard and is conceived as a city block that defines streets, squares and courts, promoting a human scale in a high-density urban environment.
The use of clay brick is fundamental to the architectural identity and success of Bullrush Court. The building’s external envelope uses 102.5mm brickwork, structured into three main elements: the civic face, the courtyard elevation, and a darker plinth at ground level. These elements combine to provide texture, depth, and clarity, reinforcing the overall design strategy.
Bulrush Court demonstrates how brick detailing with thoughtful massing, and a strong sense of material identity can create distinctive, affordable housing rooted in place, history, and community. The result is a building that is both recognisable and individual, delivering practical, sustainable homes with long-term architectural value.
Bourne concluded: “The BDA Brick Awards celebrate everything that is outstanding about the UK’s brick industry. Winning in any category is a significant achievement: securing two awards in such a competitive field, is something we truly value.”
